On the other hand how many elite units can you name from any faction in this era? It's not until reaching the ETW era that designated elite units really appear anyway, before that time it is simply different types of Royal Guard and Nobility units that are considered as elite. Huskarls really should be in Saxon and all the Norse tribes or at least an equivalent just maybe different styles of Huskarls for e.g Dane Huskarls could be armed with shield and Viking Sword, Geat Huskarls with Shield and spear and Jute Huskarls with the axe (as they are).Īll Norse tribes with a Jarl (Earl) or King had Huskarl's even the Saxons. ![]() It is said that the Varangian's were originally from Sweden but they were centuries later and were really Vikings from Kiev I don t think it would be applicable certainly not factual to name then as a group in these times. I don't mind it too much, I can't think off the top of my head what Geat unit could be deemed as a separate elite unit? TBH the only elite units the Norse had were Huskarl's (House Karl's) and Bereserker's, they had few archers usually one or two per warband and even fewer cavalry if any. Yes, we know the Thrall spears are the weakest Norse spear unit - we don't know how they compare to the bottom-tier axe or melee units (interested to see how these will differ), however, or how much of a discount they'll get relative to the standard Norse spearmen. And yes, the different faction-specific variants of standard units are unique units every bit as distinct from other factions' variants as the average unique spear, sword or bow unit in R2 - all that differed was that they were replacement units rather than extras (I don't know what R2 has against replacement units, making all unique units additive to the base roster - why not Huscarls instead of Berserkers, say?). ![]() The Oda had an ashigaru unit with longer spears. Shogun 2 had a DLC giving each pre-existing faction a unique unit (the new factions released as DLC each had 1-2 units). Spartans had unique units from the whole spectrum or do you consider Royal Spartans to be low-tier? Shogun 2 did not have unique units in the proper sense. There's nowhere close to enough context to know how good or otherwise these units are, or their associated factions. Given that Attila reinstates multi-turn recruitment, low-tier units may have actual value as they did in older games, rather than just being inferior versions of elite units as in Rome 2. Spartans in R2 had a whole suite of low-tier unique units in their helots in Shogun 2 the Oda unique unit was an ashigaru unit - it's hardly a novel practice. We also don't know how cheap the assorted Norse spear units are. ![]() Two extra spear units look unnecessary, but then so do two extra axe units - another area where the Norse roster hardly seems lacking. Geats are always going to be difficult, since no one really knows what the name referred to, and in Roman usage it variously referred to Visigoths, Germanic peoples generally, or more broadly still was an aggregate name for eastern 'barbarians'. The name perhaps shouldn't be taken too literally after all, there are also "Norse Pikemen" and "pikemen" throughout R2, though the name properly refers to medieval longspearmen. These entire rosters are anachronistic, 'Norse berserkers' no less so than huscarls.
